Large-scale battery storage and renewable energies
are the new dream couple

Over 50% of electricity consumption in Germany is now covered by renewable energies - and the trend is still rising. The more weather-driven green electricity is fed into the grid, the greater the need for storage solutions to stabilise the grid.

Large-scale battery storage as the key to security of supply and system stability

Our energy system urgently needs flexibility in order to adapt variable electricity generation to our consumption. Large battery storage systems can provide flexibility quickly and cheaply. Large-scale storage projects are also nonerlei Subsidies dependent on them. They are the missing piece of the puzzle for a secure and stable renewable energy supply in Germany. As with photovoltaics, this technology will also far exceed current expectations. When solar parks and large-scale storage systems are combined, they can act as a Solar battery power plants provide a quality boost. The expansion of the storage infrastructure therefore directly follows the growth in renewable energies and accelerates and enables the further transformation of the energy system.

How does a large-scale battery storage system work?

explanatory video

With supply and demand dynamics depending on the time of day of the electricity market storage systems temporarily absorb "surplus" electricity from solar and wind farms. As system stabilisers, they therefore reduce curtailments. At the same time they bridge bottlenecks. Large battery storage systems therefore play a decisive role for the further Supply reliability and security of the electricity grid. By storing and feeding in electricity, they not only keep the frequency stable, but also the voltage in the power grid. This means that System costs reduced. (Video from EnBW)

the large-scale battery storage expansion

Storage facilities are financed via market dynamics

One State subsidies for large storage facilities is not necessary and would slow down the dynamic expansion of storage. The market is already providing the necessary impetus for innovation and investment: If little solar and wind energy is generated, the price of electricity rises, but the trade in stored electricity is boosted.

Large storage tanks even make yield gaps lucrative, because they sell the stored electricity profitably. Furthermore, variable electricity prices also lead to profitable business models such as arbitrage trading or peak capping. In addition, investments in storage technologies become more attractive, because the better the technology, the more profitable the trade in electricity from large-scale storage facilities.

Large-scale battery storage expansion in the fast lane

Dynamic and market-based

The new energy industry is taking a dynamic and market-based approach to storage expansion. Storage systems will stabilise the energy systems of the future in the long term. The decisive factor is a Reducing barriers to grid connections for stand-alone storage systems and the future standard model: solar parks with storage.

Transmission system operators (TSOs) are currently forecasting a storage capacity of 32 gigawatts - a figure that would be more realistic by 2030. The PV and storage industry is already assuming around 100 gigawatt hours with capacity factors of 3 to 4-hour storage systems by 2030.

Large-scale battery storage systems in combination with solar parks are a key step towards utilising renewable energies in the future. in a forward-looking and system-friendly way. They make it possible to store surpluses and make them available at times of high demand, which not only improves grid stability but also reduces price peaks.
