Biodiversity
International Day of the biodiversity
The Convention on Biological Diversity was officially adopted on 22 May 1992. This day marks the international endeavour to promote, conserve and distribute natural resources more fairly.

Agreement to promote nature and species conservation
Every year, 22 May commemorates the adoption of the international UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1992, which has been signed by a total of 196 member states, including Germany and the European Union.
The convention pursues a holistic approach and has set itself three important goals:
- the conservation of biodiversity
- the sustainable use of its components
- the balanced and fair distribution of the benefits arising from the utilisation of resources.
In addition to nature conservation, the agreement also includes the protection of animal and plant species and the promotion of ecosystem diversity.
The trigger for the international agreement is the decline in biodiversity and the associated loss of habitats, species and genes in nature that can be observed worldwide.

PV expansion in Germany now not only plays a major role in the energy transition, but can also be a great benefit for biodiversity and species diversity. If solar parks are built and maintained correctly, they can actively promote nature and species conservation - for decades to come!
