Büttel 2 solar park

ENERPARC AG's Büttel 2 solar park was built in 2022 (first construction phase) and 2023 (second construction phase) and is located in Schleswig-Holstein, not far from the River Elbe and the town of Brunsbüttel. A special feature of the plant is that it is regularly crossed by trenches of different widths that run in a north-south direction. In places there is standing water with tidal grassland vegetation. The ditches, including their edges, together with the gravel paths essentially represent the comparatively open structures of the site. The modules are relatively close together. A high-voltage power line runs across the eastern section.

Natural environment and special features

Natural space

Lower Elbe lowlands (Elbmarsch)

Surroundings

The part of the Büttel solar park examined in our study (Büttel 2) is located around one kilometre north of the Elbe. To the north, there is a narrow canal in the immediate vicinity, followed by a tarmac road. Behind this is a larger ditch. 200 metres to the north of the solar park are two other larger ground-mounted PV systems and wind turbines.

Relief

The facility is located three metres below sea level on flat terrain.

Biotope

Mainly species-poor economic grassland (GA), species-poor to moderately species-rich grassland (GY), moderately species-rich grassland (GYy) and ruderal herbaceous meadow (Rhm). In addition: fluttering rush swamp (NSf), ditches (FG), reed canary grass reed (NRr) and more. A detailed list can be found in the biotope mapping.

Description of the racks

The frame is anchored to the ground by ramming posts fitted with support struts.

Type of modules

Monofacial modules were installed.

Paths

Gravel paths were laid in the area.

Structural features

There are a large number of ditches with open areas within the site.

Management

Mowing

The Büttel solar park is maintained by grazing on a plot-by-plot basis. Alternating ditch maintenance is also carried out in order to preserve habitats for woody plants and reed breeders.

Information on compensatory measures

For the plant, compensation areas had to be created to compensate for ecopoints and for the habitat of the meadow pipit.
